The Virgin of Chiquinquirá, also known as the "Patroness of the Peoples" and the "Patroness of Colombia and Venezuela", is a religious figure venerated throughout Latin America. Her story is shrouded in mystery and miracles, and her devotion has transcended national borders, uniting Colombia and Venezuela in shared faith and devotion.

The Miraculous Apparition:

The history of the Virgin of Chiquinquira dates back to 1586, in the town of Chiquinquira, Colombia. According to tradition, a painting of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, which was in a local house, underwent a miraculous process of restoration. The image, which was in poor condition and darkened, regained its original brightness and beauty in an inexplicable way. This event was considered a divine act, and the Virgin of Chiquinquirá began to be venerated as the protector of the region.

The Link with Venezuela:

During colonial times, Chiquinquirá was part of the Captaincy General of Venezuela, encompassing much of what is now Venezuela and Colombia. Therefore, devotion to the Virgin of Chiquinquirá extended to both countries. In 1829, when Venezuela separated from Colombia, the original image of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá was transferred to Venezuela, becoming the "Patroness of Venezuela".

Patroness of Colombia:

Although the original image is in Venezuela, in Chiquinquira, Colombia, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquira was built, where a replica of the miraculous painting is preserved. The Virgin of Chiquinquirá also became the "Patroness of Colombia" in 1857, and her feast day is celebrated on July 9. Colombians consider her a symbol of unity and faith, and her devotion has played an important role in the culture and history of Colombia.
