The Schoenaich comes from the traditional nobility of Lower Lusatia and was first mentioned in a document as Tytzko (Dietrich) de Schoenaich in 1329. A settlement of the same name, present-day Piękne Kąty, now constitutes a district of the municipality of Carolath (Siedlisko). Another settlement of the same name is located near Żary in Neumark, present-day Sieciejów.

The following are examples of the ennoblement of this lineage: - Appointment as a baron: around 1550, Fabian of Schoenaich of Franz of Rechenberg acquired the manors of Carolath and Beuthen on the river Oder. The imperial confi rmation of the entailed estate took place in 1601 with "Baron of Beuthen", under which the recognition of the Austrian hereditary territories of the appointment as baron took place on June 28, 1616.

Nomination as Count of the Empire: Hans Georg Baron of Schoenaich-Beuthen, acquired in 1700 the nomination of Count of the Empire. - Appointment as Count: his son Hans Carl, Prussian royal secret minister of government and war, was ennobled in 1741 (limited primogeniture) and was granted the appointment of Prussian counts with the name "of Carolath-Schoenaich", in 1753 without limitation (for his offspring) with the name "of Schoenaich-Carolath". The name of primogeniture "of Carolath-Beuthen" was conferred on Prince Heinrich of Carolath-Beuthen in 1861 when he was granted the noble title "Most Serene Highness". Subsequent family descendants bear the name Prince or Princess of Schoenaich-Carolath

In 1854 the family acquired the hereditary affiliation of Prussian noble lineage.
